Jim was born and raised in Eastern Montana along the Yellowstone River. As a young man, he and his wife, Mary Jo, moved up river to Livingston, Montana. There, he worked as a machinist in the railroad shops until they closed in the late 1980’s. Then he turned to wood carving and bronze sculpture to support his family. Over the years, he has produced hundreds of wildlife sculptures using knives and chisels to carve hardwoods into figures with motion.

In 1991, Jim became a member of the Western Heritage Artists, who exhibit an annual show in Great Falls, Montana. There, he has taken home a Best of Show and several first place ribbons for his work. He is now retired but still carves with a passion while enjoying a beautiful life that surrounds him.
